Leading Industry Experts' Predictions on the Growth of Publishing by the Year 2000 Presented at Publishing 2000 Luncheon Business Wire - March 25, 1998 19:40 %IDG-BOOKS %CALIFORNIA %NEW-YORK %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %COMED %PUBLISHING %INTERACTIVE %MULTIMEDIA %INTERNET %TRADESHOW V%BW P%BW NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 1998--IDG Books Worldwide and Publish magazine sponsored a first press luncheon entitled "Publishing 2000" at the Seybold '98 trade show on Wednesday, March 18th featuring leading industry experts' predictions on the top technologies that will revolutionize publishing. Gene Gable, publisher and president of Publish magazine, moderated the panel of industry experts which included: Clement Mok, information architect; Janine Warner, book author and web designer; Ira Finklestein, senior vice president & director of print services at BBDO; Ted Alspach, book author and publishing consultant; and George Cacioppo, vice president and general manager, enterprise product division, Adobe. Gable also presented the results of a recent Publish magazine survey on the difficult technology choices facing publishers and graphic designers. Said Gable, "Apple Computer's Macintosh still commands a strong lead among publishing and graphic arts professionals, but the platform's position is clearly threatened by Microsoft Windows machines, particularly those running the Windows NT operating system," stated Gable. "As corporate pressure for compatibility increases and software development turns increasingly toward multi-platform support, publishers and graphic designers are facing very difficult technology decisions." According to figures released at the Publishing 2000 luncheon, 32% of publishing professionals exclusively use the Macintosh operating system, compared to 24% who work in Windows only. Nearly 28% consistently use both Macintosh and Windows platforms, and 11% have a mix of Macintosh, Windows and UNIX systems. Clement Mok elaborated on the Mac/Windows issue. "Our mindset is the biggest hurdle our industry has to face, not understanding the technology. In my offices, I've watched the staff size and the skill-set of my employees shift dramatically over the past three years. "Today, 80% of the work done for clients is Internet-related, compared to under 5% three years ago. The Internet was the alternative route to get information three years ago. Now, it is the primary route for many of my client's businesses." According to author Ted Alspach, choosing platforms isn't an issue anymore. "Once Adobe Illustrator released their upgrades for both PC and Macintosh simultaneously, the platform became irrelevant. I predict graphics publishers will stop development on Macintosh products at some point soon, and this will contribute to further deterioration of Macintosh market-share." Warner attributed her success to focusing on dual specialties simultaneously. "Running a web design shop while writing articles on web technology enable" her to keep her skills and knowledge base cutting-edge. "Publishing and web authoring tools need to work together in cross-media platforms," said Adobe's George Cacioppo. "Adobe is focusing on creating products that easily adapt authoring information created for print to the web and vice-versa."
