different worlds. this is like 286 vs 386 - the merced bus is twice as wide so even at the same clock rate the theoretical max is twice the data rate of 32 bit chips (what Intel calls IA32 architecture). Andy Grove has publicly talked about bus speeds greater than 500MHz for merced. It's all pie in the sky at the moment, real merced chips are a long ways away so no one knows what the real numbers will be. most people think the IA32 will keep pace in terms of bus speeds but obviously not data rate, this will be necessary to ensure compatibility of peripherals for the two chip families.

ref: Merced & BUS speed.

Pat:

Didn't you ask me the other day about Merced and the BUS speed??Well I
didn't know the answer,so I went our resident Intel expert from MIT Mr.Paul Engel and here is his answer. From the looks of it I don't think anybody knows yet.
