Lourdes became what it is today thanks to the visions of Bernadette Soubirous, not a group of children. There was a good deal of scepticism, but their authenticity was eventually confirmed by the Bishop of Tarbes. The vision of Our Lady of Fatima was also accepted by the church. Never heard of Garabandal. Medjughorjie (probably misspelled, but it's too much trouble to look it up) has not received official sanction. Curiously, though the kids have recanted, pilgrims still turn up.

What about the Virgin in the tortilla pan? And the husband of the telephone operator at my bank is quite sure that he converses regularly with Mary. His priest is rather less convinced.

This sort of thing cuts the other way, too. Remember the children of Salem who managed to persuade the entire town that they'd seen women performing witchcraft? They recanted, too, but only after it was too late. Group hysteria of this sort is a not uncommon phenomenon.
