The reason is Steve Jobs knows he is "our only hope" as he once said, and as a smart guy he is, he is playing his cards right, that means he is negotiating what stake in Apple he will end up with... I bet 10% minimum. The earnings on april 15 will be so awesome, so much more than what analysts are expeting, that once they are announced, the shareholders on april 22 will say "yes" to almost anything he asks for in return for being permanent CEO and returning the company to its past glory ______________ "And the reason they do not announce his candidacy right away is?"
