you and I are among the few that believes Amelio did some good things for Apple,

Count me in. In fact, most people here begrudge Amelio for the end-of-year bonus fiasco, even though Amelio was setup by his managers in this one, a point he made amply clear on his "don't do this to me ever again" video in the quarter after.

Personally I think his main error was not to cut deep enough, plus overpaying for NeXT (here we are over a year since the NeXT purchase and Apple hasn't earned a single cent from it). He announced two rounds of cuts, and even then simple math showed they were not deep enough. He simply did not have the guts to start an Al Dunlap-style round. Senor Jobs did.
