A floater is a rig that floats. A semi or a drillship. Both are floaters.

Teddy -- Rigs named "MARINE" belong to MDCO. GLOMAR are GLM.

Seems that the term deepwater is used loosely here...and elsewhere. In the industry it is safe to say that deepwater means water depths over about 1200 meters or 3600 feet. Everyone has their own definition though.

Of course all floaters now being built are for really deepwater. No one is building a rig just for 1200 meters...wouldn't make much sense. However, there will be a BUNCH of very steady development work for semis offshore Africa coming down the pike in the 2000-3000 ft depth areas. But right now sexy is the REALLY deep water.
