Barbara:
Alta has done better than most gold stocks (from 1.25 to 1.97 I believe)... without price of gold going higher, ALTA could retract to 1.5... BUT Olinghouse is coming up, and I remain optimistic about gold this year. I exited half of my ALTA holding but it is going to be tough to buy it low again... In the meantime I am playing with other stocks/sectors. Bought VAALY and sold during the last blip for a 8% gain.
Oil drillers will do well if price of oil is going higher. Many say that it will not. But you never know if El Nino gives us torrid weather in the US this summer, with air conditioning working full speed...
Good Luck.
(NOTE: I always buy half of what I want in a position and then add on the dip or on the surge, then sell I that half again very fast, at a profit or loss ... to keep some money for quick trades..... that money is margin money and it is NOT a good idea to be margined out for long!.... Lastly, I use limit orders a lot, especially useful for ALTA that is trading very thinly... sell on the climb and buy the dips... I am preparing myself to buy some ALTA again... on the dip or on a POG surge.... I have bought Compaq because of the extreme pessimism... Dell and GTW look like good bet too, despite high PEs... And I will exit again...).
