Study: ISPs To Spend $2.5B On Network Equipment In '98

Top-tier Internet service providers will spend $2.5 billion in network equipment, software and services this year, according to a new market study from Business Research Group.

The report predicts a massive shift to value-added services such as Internet Protocol telephony, Internet fax, virtual private networks and custom applications. The new offerings will boost Internet service provider (ISP) revenue 40 percent this year, the study predicts.

"ISPs will continue to enjoy unprecedented growth as they shift to a business model built on value-added services. Few - if any - ISPs can continue to thrive by providing generic flat-rate access," said Greg Cline, BRG's director of Internet architecture research.
