Michael, that's because the market sees a brighter future for Dell than Compaq. Future is the operative word. Dell's sales are growing more rapidly, Dell certainly has a much higher rate of return on assets due to its superb inventory handling system, Dell isn't exposed to rapid obsolescence the way Compaq is, and Dell isn't playing in the cut-throat sub $1,000 range. Finally, Dell is tops in customer satisfaction. It all adds up to a company that is in a position to put the screws to its competitors. Paul van Wijk posted this link earlier, but I think it would be well for you to read it very carefully and ponder exactly what is being said by the company:

Notice that while Dell's competitors feel they are engaged in a price war Dell feels no effect.

Regards,

Paul

ref: DELL vs CPQ

Mike:

If your assumption has to have any value you should also then say that CPQ's revenues and perhaps even earnings are higher than Microsoft's which has a lofty PE and stock price, much higher than CPQ, and therefore CPQ is a better company than Microsoft and valued as such,No??? If all this is true then I fail to understand why the
market is not listening to your argument.

MIke,
We have covered this before but here goes anyway. CPQ announced a couple weeks ago that this quarter they have NO, Zilch, zero earnings.
Dell's vice-chairman announced a day or two ago that Dell is on track. I for one am glad to own the company that is going to have profits this quarter.

biz.yahoo.com

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 6, 1998--Compaq Computer Corporation
(NYSE:CPQ - news) today said that its first quarter sales are expected to be about the same as
those for the first quarter a year ago. Earnings are expected to be roughly break-even.

Michael: Four words for you-- RETURN ON INVESTED CAPITAL -- What does it cost CPQ relative to DELL to produce those earnings? DELL is much, much more efficient.

>>If you take a look at the earning statements,
you'll see that COMPAQ earns as much in one quarter
as Dell makes in TWO quarters. Yet Dell is right now
valued what TWENTY PER CENT higher than COMPAQ. Even
a weak COMPAQ quarter blows away Dell's best quarter.<<
