("UIH") (Nasdaq: UIHAI), today announced that it will launch Goldmine, the continent's first high-speed broadband Internet access service. Initially, Goldmine will connect customers' personal computers to the Internet via cable modems operating over UPC's cable networks. The Pan-European service will be available in the near future to more than 3 million homes and businesses in UPC's territories in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway. UPC will roll out the service to all of its customers in the near future. Plans call for Goldmine to also be offered as a turn-key service package to other European cable operators in the future which could significantly increase the market potential of the service. "We've seen enthusiastic customer response to our initial market tests of high-speed Internet access. Goldmine offers a branded Pan-European solution to satisfy customer demand across the Continent. The combination of transmission speeds of up to 100 times faster than traditional phone lines, the convenience of permanent on-line connection to the Internet, and CD quality video and sound will make Goldmine a truly compelling offer with feature-rich applications. Additionally, we will use the name Goldmine with various taglines, such as the one above, that will emphasize that the wealth of knowledge available on the Internet will be available to our customers at speeds and prices that are superior to any other available source," said Tim Morel, Chief Executive Officer of the Internet services division of UPC. On a market trial basis, UPC has already begun rolling out a high-speed modem service to its customers in its European markets. In the future, this service will be known as Goldmine to establish UPC's brand name for its Internet services product in the marketplace. "UPC's customer base is located in countries with some of Europe's highest concentrations of personal computer users. Our technologically superior networks provide a world class platform for offering high-speed broadband Internet connectivity. Goldmine is both a unique customer solution that meets a real and growing demand and a powerful business opportunity for telecommunications providers like UPC. As we move forward, we'll explore partnerships that enhance the branded Goldmine content and services, and expand the reach of the service beyond UPC territories," said Mark Schneider, President and Chief Executive Officer of UPC. UPC is the largest privately owned cable TV operator in Europe.
