FYI: Here is the info out of consumer reports. It appears to me that the impact and strap rating carried the most weight vs comfort. (as it should in a youth helmet). PRODUCT UPDATE: DECEMBER 1997 We tested five bicycle helmets, some of which were introduced too late to include in our June 1997 report, and found one with better impact protection than any of those previously rated: the Louis Garneau Globe. At $50, it's also a CR BEST BUY. In addition to providing impact protection, a helmet should be secure enough to not roll off. It should be well ventilated, with straps that adjust easily. The Ratings which follow show how the new models fared. Half the models tested for the June report used ITW Nexus Pinchguard or ITW Nexus TSK63 buckles, which sometimes failed our tests of buckle-and-strap strength. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found similar inconsistencies when it performed buckle-and-strap-strength tests on helmets that we identified as having suspect buckles. Of the 26 samples it tested, two failed. One model we tested this time uses the Pinchguard buckle and one the TSK63, but neither failed in our tests. Due to the inconsistent nature of the failures, we can't be sure that the problem has been solved, but we suggest you avoid helmets that have a Pinchguard buckle with a date code of 96 or a TSK63 buckle with a date code of 8/96, 10/96 or 11/96, which are the date codes on buckles that failed our earlier tests. If you already have a helmet with one of these buckles, keep wearing it. Any helmet is safer than no helmet. Many previously recommended helmets are still available, including the Bell EVO2 Pro, $100; Bell EVO Pro, $85; and Bell Psycho Pro, $75 (all adult helmets); the Specialized Air Wave Mega, $35 (youth); and the Pro-Action Ocean Friends, $20 (toddler). The Ratings list the tested BRAND/MODELs by type. Within types, they're listed in order of overall SCORE, which is primarily based on impact absorption, with ventilation, roll-off resistance, strap adjustment and weight also considered. Scores are on a scale of 0 to 100: 81 to 100 is excellent, 61 to 80 is very good, 41 to 60 is good, 21 to 40 is fair, 0 to 20 is poor. If a product is both high in quality and relatively low in price, we deem it a CR BEST BUY. IMPACT protection reflects how well the helmet fared when mounted to a weighted headform and dropped from a succession of heights onto metal blocks of various shapes. ROLL-OFF reflects how difficult it was to push the helmet out of place after it was fitted correctly on the head. VENT (venting) reflects judgments from three expert riders who wore the helmet when riding or in a special wind tunnel. Toddler models were judged by assessing design. STRAP reflects both ease of adjustment and how well the strap guides stayed in place.
