I see stock buybacks as an indirect gift to shareholders in lieu of a cash distribution. As the stock goes up the shareholder has the option of cashing out as opposed to the taxable event of a cash distribution.
If a company did well and banked a lot of cash it should be used to enhance shareholder value one way or another.
