SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 1998

Bay Networks Versalar 5399 Remote Access Concentrator

aces performance tests'; clocked at 35%

faster than its nearest competitor

Bay Networks,(R) Inc. (NYSE:BAY), today announced that its Versalar(TM) 5000 access switch, outfitted with the Versalar 5399 remote access concentrator (RAC) module, received top-billing in Network World's review of remote access servers, beating out competitors including 3Com, Ascend, Compaq and Shiva. Awarded Network World's "Blue Ribbon" for the recognition of performance, features, manageability and installation/configuration, Bay Networks' RAC displayed the highest throughput while offering versatile and feature-rich options including high scalability and hot-swappable cards.

The March 23 comparative review highlighting Bay Networks Versalar 5000 access switch reported to readers that they need look no further than Bay Networks for 'an enterprise-class remote access server that handles lots of sessions with solid throughput.' Bay Networks Versalar 5000 access switch offers the industry's only integrated multi-technology platform via a 13-slot chassis that houses the 5399 RAC boards, as well as other modules, including routing, switching, management and configuration. Everything in the chassis, including VLAN configuration, can be managed from a single Bay Optivity(R) network management console.

"This recognition from one of the industry's most respected publications demonstrates that Bay Networks is committed to offering best-in-class products," said Grace Carr, vice president of worldwide marketing for Bay Networks. "Network World's aggressive testing further confirms that Bay Networks continues to exceed customer requirements with the highest levels of performance and throughput."

Testing was conducted using 60 Windows 95-based PCs, each of which tapped its own 33.6K bit/sec modem to transfer files to and from a Windows NT 4.0 server via the test RAS unit. Up to 60 PCs were transferring files and Network World calculated the average throughput figure. Authenticating users during testing was conducted with the Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) and by giving each user an automatically assigned IP address.

Bay Networks Versalar 5000 access switch integrates dial access, routing, switching, and shared media in a single system, easing customers' management burden while lowering costs through an all-in-one solution. This highly versatile platform, combined with a BayDSPTM-based architecture, makes the Versalar access switch the most flexible platform for supporting the services of today and tomorrow. Providing first-rate throughput, the Versalar 5000 access switch was the only product in the roundup that handled up to 576 calls when fully configured, and up to thousands of calls when the four chassis were bolted together.
