Jim,
you know that and I know that (as do some others) but many (too many) do not know the diff between and actual buyback and an authorization. The increase probably covers additional vested options. <g>

What's wrong with you! Are you short INTC? Companies only authorize share buy backs.....The actual buyback is conducted by authorized corporate reps...This buyback is bullish for the stock so you better just cover your short position now!

Indeed; if they bought back all 129,000,000 shares whose buyback is now AUTHORIZED, it would cost about $10 billion -- their ENTIRE cash reserve. Clearly, they are not planning to do this, indeed it is unlikely that they will ACTUALLY buy back more than the 29 million shares that were authorized for buyback BEFORE today's announcement.

In other words, this announcement has only psychological value, it is unlikely that ANY shares will be bought back following this announcement that would not have been bought back anyway.
