From Briefing's Market View:
Microsoft (MSFT) said it would beat this quarter's numbers by 4 cents.
MSFT never makes pre-announcements and it is hard to see what advantage there is in telling the Justice Department they are in flying high. MSFT said it was because other companies were warning, but we don't see any problems in the stock market, so it is hard to see what Gates was worried about.

Another explanation is that the 17% or so revenue gain MSFT forecast
this quarter, which is down sharply from recent revenue growth, might
have been of concern. So, they dipped into those reserves they've been
building up all these years, and cut expenses a little. With MSFT's
margins, putting on a few more cents was no problem. The stock rocketed in after hours trading.

My own opinion: watch out when the earnings report comes out.
