The need for multiservice in the backbone is questionable. This is what the edge's job is. More edge switches are sold so these better be good at what they do, and not get bogged down in other things or they tend to be non-competitive on cost. I don't think multiservice is in question anymore. Look at AT&T. They said ASND was the only choice for ATM core. They are moving Worldnet IP onto it. Native multi-QoS ATM services onto it. And all the FR traffic onto it. The key for carriers is to resell their network over and over and over again.
