3Com Corporation And Siemens Public Communications Networks Integrate Internet Gateway With Digital Switch To Produce First Ever Multi-Service Central Office Switch
3Com's Total ControlT Platform and Siemens' EWSD Digital Switch Enable New Generation of Custom Calling Features, Including Voice over IP; Demo at Cebit98

Santa Clara, Calif. - March 9, 1998 - 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) and Siemens Public Communications Networks, Munich, today announced a joint development agreement that combines voice and data networking to produce the first ever multi-service central office switch. The companies have integrated 3Com's Total ControlT multi-service platform with Siemens' EWSD (Elektronisches Wahlsystem Digital) Class 5 digital switching system to simplify remote access to the Internet and enable delivery of a whole new generation of custom-calling services, including Voice Over IP (VOIP).

This joint development agreement between the two companies positions them at the forefront of network convergence. (Also see today's other 3Com/Siemens announcement, which aims to meet the needs of enterprise customers: "Siemens and 3Com To Roll Out Stackable Solutions For Voice and Data.") The implementation of the Total Control Internet gateway in the EWSD system enables custom-calling services that can make using the Internet and telephone much easier. At the same time, telephone network operators can offer efficient Internet access through their existing networks, thereby reducing the investment in new infrastructure. Some of the potential new services are:

The jointly developed Internet gateway and its new services will be demonstrated at Cebit98 March 19-25 in Hanover, Germany (3Com Booth-Hall 11, B62, Siemens Booth-Hall 14, H14). The product is expected to ship this spring.

NOTE:

Aware is indexing their server today...so a search couldn't be done there. However they do list Siemens on the partner list.

This was interesting...at least to me it was. :o)

The Universal ADSL solution is part of Siemens' innovationsTM program, which offers service providers a clear migration path toward converged voice and data networks while protecting their existing investment. The EWSD switching solution will be the heart of a client/server architecture-based network which offers a single platform for local, tandem, long distance, wireless and Universal ADSL service.

i like the way this sounds....

ICG Announces DSL Deployment ÿ Revised
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Copyright c 1998 TeleChoice, Inc.

March 26, 1998 -- ICG Communications announced the deployment of DSL technology throughout its regions including Colorado, California, the Ohio Valley and parts of the Southeastern United States by year-end and plans broader deployment in 1999.

ICG has been working with Lucent Technologies and other industry members on DSL trials to bring this new technology to consumers as an alternative to current analog modems.

ICG will be collocated in more than 100 central offices throughout its regions with DSL equipment by the end of 1998. ICG plans to collocate in an additional 100 central offices within its regions and 200 central offices in places outside its regions by the end of 1999.

The DSL service will be sold over the Internet and by ICG's sales team to target business and home office customers. As part of the company's data strategy, ICG's DSL service also will be part of a "bundled" offering of local, long distance, Internet and data services.

ICG will be offering a wide variety of DSL services based on solutions identified by and for their customers. Incremental speeds will run the gamut based on scalability to the customer. Price points are planned to match major competitor pricing parameters.

ICG is still in negotiations with equipment vendors although Lucent is a strong candidate based on existing contracts with them for deployment of 5ESS switches (approximately $1B).

With regards to line-code decisions, ICG's primary concern is the vendor's timely and reliable delivery of equipment once wide-scale deployments begin in Q3 to Q4 of this year.

Primary target markets for ICG not only include SOHO and small, medium-sized businesses but they are also pursuing the residential segment as a result of the synergies created through the Netcom acquisition (500K dial-up customers).

TeleChoice will be closely observing ICG's DSL deployment announcements as '98 progresses.
