Taken from Veba's Annual profit statement:

Chemicals unit Huels AG suffered a 14.6 percent drop in DVFA
earnings to 393 million marks, due to a slump at MEMC Electronic
Materials, in which Huels owns 52 percent. MEMC makes silicon
wafers for the semiconductor industry, which has been pressured
by sharp declines in memory chip prices.
To keep profit on the rise, Veba planned some divestments,
mainly in the trading, transportation and services unit. "We will shed activities with sales of five billion marks," Hartmann said. "Our goal is to have a balanced portfolio with solid earnings contributors and rapid growth generators."
International sales accounted for 35 percent of the total in
1997, up from 31 percent in 1996. Foreign investors hold 44 percent of Veba shares.
