Perhaps your shares were sold to an other MM who did not have a bid and ask of 2-5/16 and 2-3/8, remember NASDAQ is like an Auction, different MM have different bid and ask prices.

Hope this helps, I wouldn't fight it because I don't think you could win with these hawks.

You point to a problem with this market - you as a small investor do not know for sure what the order situation is, and further IMO the system can lead to a great deal of manipulation. If the market was computer based with all orders time stamped and stacked up fully, then you could easily see your order, and know what's the real bid ask, as well as see all the orders above and below your price.
Anyway, what lesson? - do not place market orders. Put in your price unless you are desperate to get out - if so expect to get scalped unless you are in a very active and heavily bid market. My experience says that anything you may sacrifice on putting in an all or nothing order with price guidlines will be more than compensated for over time.
