Java already paved highways, to hell with substantial inroads. The exit signs read: HP, Ericsson, Motorola, IBM, Oracle, and soon we will be hearing of a licensing agreement with Sony. So far, things have turned out pretty much as I predicted, but then it was rather obvious to anybody who cared to give it consideration two years ago. The fact is, my predictions were nothing more than a band-wagon-esque agreement with what was already the general consensus outside of Microsoft. If a Java office-pack knocks out Microsoft Office in two years I would consider that a rapid defeat. What were you expecting, six weeks? Be serious.

Microsoft will fall as follows:

1. Office will be replaced with a cheaper, Java-based office-pack which uses a portable XML for file format along with a virtually infinite variety of Java Beans to support it.

2. Windows CE will be crushed by Embedded Java. CE is in trouble: it can't fit in a phone or similar device and it never will. Big trouble.

3. Windows itself will begin to crumble as Java applications reach a critical mass and the migration to a pure Java OS starts in earnest.

>>> From this, may we infer that Rod believes it will be many months or years before Java makes substantial inroads? That is, if Office is Casualty #1 and it is going to take several years, that seems to be an inconsistency with the notion that Java is taking the country by storm now. What gives?<<<

All we worry about here is computer software. Meanwhile, Java is in many other kinds of devices - from automobiles to cell phones to burglar alarms to cameras. sun is getting into lots of other businesses because of this, at least according to Scott McNealy. Windows can't do that. Also, there is more and more Java on the internet. CNN and other news organizations, for instance.

Probably Java will do these other things first, before it becomes a serious threat in Windows programming. If you just want to write a windows productivity app, I think you are still better off with delphi or Borland C++ (or MS VC++.)

Java is also a first cut. Other languages are already being ported to the Java virtual machine foundation, so look for some kind of improved object language using the Java underpinnings to be the ultimate worry for MSFT.
