So I guess that technology and innovation stop at the Merced? How long did it take for these things to happen in teh jump from 8086 to 286, to 386, to 486? 586? 686?

I'm not saying it won't happen, but then again, none of these things had the same wattage as a microwave oven, either. I'm trying to point out that just because it's on PR/Business Wire doesn't mean it's a done deal. The i[?7,?8,?9]60 was touted in much the same way, but there was/is too much reliance on the x86 architecture. Yes, I know that merced will run x86 code, but who wants to pay >$1k for a CPU that's slower running their s/w than a cheapo x86? Merced may be the wave of the future, but it's a while out yet. Of course, the memory and disk manufacturers will love it, because of what the architecture will do to code size.
