TCI [TCOMA] expects to introduce a beta version of General Instrument's [GIC] DCT-5000 next-gen box in November, TCI said yesterday at a CableLabs conference. Pre-production of the devices should begin in January '99 with full production slated for late Q1 '99 or early Q2. Meanwhile TCI will need to finalize its letters of intent with Sun Microsystems [SUNW] and Microsoft [MSFT] by April 30 for use of Windows CE and Java on TCI's boxes. At the NCTA show in early May, CableLabs hopes to present specs to date for OpenCable boxes. Also at NCTA, expect the publication of OpenCable software APIs, allowing companies to begin applications for the boxes.
