Calgary, Alberta, March 26 (Bloomberg) -- Alternative Fuel Systems Inc. shares more than doubled amid optimism about an experimental technology that the company is developing to cut pollution from diesel engines. Shares of the Calgary, Alberta, company rose C$1.62 (US$1.15) to C$3.01 in Vancouver trading of 6.1 million shares, more than 38 times the daily average. Earlier they touched C$3.15. The stock was the most active issue on Canadian markets. The company had no news to account for the heavy trading activity. Its president, Gerhard Klopp, said the shares could be gaining on the strength of recent agreements to market Alternative Fuel's technology in Europe and a contract to convert 10,000 Mexican mini-buses to natural-gas fuel. He also said investors may be buying shares because of the recent stock gains in Ballard Power Systems Inc., which is developing a fuel cell for General Motors Corp. and Daimler-Benz AG. ''The enthusiasm over Ballard has been good for us,'' said Gerhard Klopp,. ''It shows the big manufacturers have made a commitment to alternative fuel systems.'' Ballard stock fell C$7 to C$137. The company has no revenue and a market value of more than C$3 billion.
