All - Here is a PR concerning H.323 and corporate Firewalls- slightly old but very relevant to FTEL! ================================= Cisco and Intel Demonstrate Internet Calls Through Corporate Firewalls H.323-Standard Technology Lets Office-to-Office Internet Phone Calls Pass Audio and Video Through Firewalls While Maintaining Security SAN JOSE and SANTA CLARA, CALIF., March 6, 1997 -- Cisco Systems and Intel Corporation have successfully conducted an audio and video phone call through a Cisco PIX* Firewall without breaching the security of the firewall. The companies will be demonstrating the call in their booths at Internet World in Los Angeles next week. The technology is based on H.323, the same international standard for Internet voice and video communication at the heart of the Intel Internet phone. The call proves firewalls will no longer be a communications obstacle for business users who want to send Internet phone calls between networked PCs. Intel, Cisco, and other Internet industry leaders are working to promote and disseminate the use of H.323 technology through firewalls and proxies, network programs that, like firewalls filter information. Firewalls are the products that restrict the flow of information between a company's network and the Internet in order to keep sensitive information private. Today, in a separate release, Intel, Cisco and several firewall and proxy vendors announced they will use the H.323 standard to enable their products to pass communications through and onto corporate networks. Before the evolution of H.323 communications technology, passing real-time audio and video required connections between non-secure networks. Corporate firewalls and their proxies prevented packets of audio and video data from passing through the network. Next quarter, trials of this call capability will be conducted using a network shared between Cisco and Intel. "As enterprises increasingly deploy multimedia applications using industry-standard H.323 technology, such as Intel's Internet phone, the Cisco PIX Firewall ensures strong security without compromising the performance of enterprise networks," said Christine Hemrick, general manager and vice president of Cisco's Internet Appliances and Applications Business Unit. "Together with Intel, Cisco will continue to provide scaleable solutions that support today's and tomorrow's Internet applications." "The Connected PC succeeds when it brings users together," said Craig Kinnie, vice president and general manager, Intel's Internet and Communications Group. "The through-the-wall call between Cisco and Intel shows in a very real, immediate way how infrastructure development and multimedia applications combine to let PC users work more effectively together. This call is the latest step in making interoperability over the Internet a reality for business." Cisco and Intel are continuing to collaborate on Internet technology to ensure the interoperability of their products.
