Tax advice. I am sifting thru my taxes. How do I handle the Cascade
Communications/Ascend merger. Due to partial shares, I received some cash plus Ascend stock. Do I have to claim the cash on my 1997 taxes?

Are you saying that ATM has no solution benefit?

Where the heck did you get that from?

Why is AT&T installing ATM?
Why did they purchase the ASND platform as opposed to using the STRM
platform? Do you know the entire story? Is it that you simply like to demonstrate
what little knowledge you have of the sales situation or is it you simply like to encite
folks on the thread? Anyway, please don't respond. We are apparently coming
from two entirely different angles.

You used to be about 90% wrong. Here you are 100% wrong. You're slipping.

ATM has a fundamental capability (which STRM sold AT&T on)...multiservice
and dynamic allocation - it allows AT&T to place more users on the infrastructure
without requiring more bandwidth. The entire solution set was sold by STRM and
ASND capatilized on this solution by delivering a lower cost (per port costs were a
critical issue in the decision) platform than STRM could deliver. There are other
polictical reasons AT&T chose this route as well.

This is turning into entertainment! It's laughable. Anyone who truly knows the products knows this. I won't go into the technical details here. I'll just leave you with this one. FRF.8.

One other note on pricing that has real bearing here. ASND has started to win deals against CSCO even though they are coming at a ~15% premium! Yes, better products do win the prizes. Technology does count and CSCO can't deliver it.

In the long run however Frame
Relay and ATM build out is good for the sector and good for both ASND and
CSCO which should make us all happy. AT&T continues to build out the
Cisco/STRM frame relay network which in turns help drive more ATM backbone
equipment from ASND.

OK, you aren't 100% wrong. The above is very true. While AT&T wishes now that they had chosen CSCC way back when, they are stuck with STRM now. But the continued buildout is good for everyone.

One last note. I'm not coming at this by speculation. This is my business. And it's probably pointless to discuss this further as the audience is perhaps not technical enough. I'll just let the rest of the 1998 contracts speak for me.
