From the 'Zen of Shorting'
The story is told of the master short Chu Mei Ash speaking to a group of his students. The master brought forth a candlestick chart and asked what his students thought of it. After a long pause one of the students spoke, "Master, you are truly great with your shorts but I do not see a possible short here. In fact if I read the chart correctly this is one of the best stocks to go long in I have ever seen. May I ask the company."
"The company is Han So Lo rice company," Chu Mei replied. "I believe you are correct it does indicate a large price rise is in the offing."
"Are you not going to play it long, Master?" The student asked.
"I have not gone long on a stock in a long time, small worm, it might not be wise to break with this tradition."
"Is it not so, Master, that gold made long is no different from gold made short?"
"Perhaps, small worm, you have glimpsed wisdom. I will meditate on this. Would you care to join me?"
"With the Master's permission I believe I would like to go to the stock market now."
The student and many of his companions rose and bowed to Chu Mei and then hastened in the direction of the market leaving the Master and just one student.
"And you, little grub, are you not going to join your companions and go to the market? Is it that you lack money?" Chu Mei said.
"No, Master I do have money it is just some things are bothering me. If I might, I would ask you some questions, Master?"
"Please do" Chu Mei replied.
"Master, I was looking at a chart today of Han So Lo Rice company. It looked very different than the chart you had, am I mistaken?"
"Indeed, little grub, perhaps the one I have is of a few years ago. Why, yes I believe it very well may be."
"Also Master, there are rumors that Han So Lo Rice company has lost several ships in a typhoon and may be near bankrupt. And then today I saw you speaking with a young man who is an employee of Han So Lo. And I thought I saw you hand him a small bag of something. Could it be be Han So Lo is actually a good short."
"Let us take a stroll to the market," Chu Mei replied. "You have offered strong arguments to the effect that a short on Han So Lo would be a good idea. And if I read the market correctly there is now a good price rise in the stock price to allow us an excellent opportunity to do so."
Thus did the great Chu Mei Ash provide his students with vivid lessons on the wisdom of checking on all information given them.
