<<Hmm, where do you live? In Silicon Valley, it's already here.>>

"Here come those Santa Ana winds again..." Oh....no, I guess it's just the urine-scented air blowing up from the grate near the Metro. No, I've left California behind and now reside in the capitol of our great nation where the business is politics, not computers. I think it was PJ O'Rourke who said that politics is the business of getting power and privilege without possessing merit. Enough said....

<<If you want to know where the industry is going then just look at the mom and pop shops. The Compaqs, Dells and Gateways usually concentrate on processor speed.>>

Agreed. Who buys a computer at CompUSA??? I guess a lot of people. I can't imagine buying a computer from an acne-faced 16 year-old in a red polo shirt. "No, windows95 is so difficult to operate that Compaq built this additional interface on TOP of the operating system." [Sorry, I apologize for my chauvinism.]

<The small timers, in order to compete, throw their lot in on peripherals. Many of the small timers are throwing in 3D vid cards in their pre-packaged products and using K6's to bring down some of the overall cost.>

This is good news. I haven't noticed the mom's and pop's ("MOPS?") building machines with good 3d out here. The right coast is always a little behind the times. But this is always my lame-ass argument against the Intel aficionados who rag on the K6 for its poor floating point. Hey, I'd rather have a K6 with a 100mhz bus motherboard and a good 3d card and with the money I save, I can buy some more GTIS!!! [Just had to throw that in so I'm no too off-topic.]

<<I suspect the cost is going to be almost transparent on system purchases.>>

That's one conclusion. <g> No, this is where we're going. And while we all lament the ever increasing requirements for games, I can't express the difference that my 3dfx card has made in my 166mhz Pentium. $150 and I can play games that would be slideshows in software-only. The difference is remarkable. I'm a true believer. I'm going to bed. Enjoy the weekend.
