This is interesting. Where is Primestar held? In the Ventures Group? Friday March 27, 10:35 am Eastern Time U.S. preparing to block Murdoch/MCI deal-report WASHINGTON, March 27 (Reuters) - U.S. antitrust regulators are preparing to block the $1.1 billion sale of a key television satellite slot from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Ltd. (NCP.AX) and MCI Communications Corp. (MCIC - news) to a group of cable operators, the Washington Post reported on Friday. Staff of the antitrust division of the Department of Justice will recommend soon that the satellite sale to Primestar Partners be blocked outright or substantially modified, the paper reported citing sources familiar with the inquiry. MCI and News Corp acquired the desirable satellite slot, one of only three suitable for direct broadcast television transmission to the United States, in a government auction in 1996. But the partners feuded over the joint venture and never offered a direct broadcast service. Direct broadcast services are seen as the strongest potential competitor to land-based cable monopolies. Antitrust regulators were examining the effect of Primestar's proposed acquisition of the satellite slot on that competition. Primestar is owned by TCI Satellite Entertainment, a publicly traded spinoff of cable giant Tele-Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:LBTYA - news; TCOMA - news), Time Warner Inc. (TWX - news), MediaOne Group Inc (UMG - news), Comcast Corp. (CMCSA - news) and Cox Communications Inc. (COX - news). The companies could not be reached immediately for comment. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
