<<<I agree with you. But remember, all the company needs to do is sell the product to consumers... it could care less how often they end up playing it. Which is why developers spend all this time making the game pretty as opposed to putting in good gameplay. You can't really describe gameplay on the box, but you *can* show them that your first person shooter has cooler graphics than the other box next to it.>>>

Can't find any disagreement from me on this. But the game buyer is becoming more and more savvy. They download demos and read 'net reviews more now than ever before they buy. True, you'll always catch window shoppers but the real money still is in the gameplay.

Not to bring up a sore subject but I am kind of interested in how <gasp> 3DRealms is going to handle the new Duke title. I suspect we may see the same old crap, different engine, different box.

From Id I was a bit disappointed with Quake II. Not that I didn't think it was worth the effort but it still ranked as the same old stuff with a different look. Overly trying and somewhat annoying. 3D was nice but none of it really grabbed me. I suspect that we'll find the same thing true of Unreal. Just look at the forums for it. Mostly talk of bigger and meaner monsters, weaponry and levels. Absolutely no talk of a cohesive story in any way.
