TRANSITION TO DIGITAL TELEVISION UNDERWAY CEMA President Emphasizes Importance of Education Efforts Arlington, VA, March 23, 1998 -- "The launch today of the DTV Express, a digital television educational effort sponsored by Harris Corporation and PBS, underscores the importance of educating broadcasters, retailers and consumers about the transition to digital television," said Gary Shapiro, president of the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association (CEMA). "High-definition television is an extraordinary technology, but the switch from analog to digital TV can be confusing to consumers. That is why we are working to ensure a transition that is gradual - a transition that gives consumers plenty of time to choose how and when they make the switch to digital. This year marks the beginning of the most significant change in television since its introduction. At the International Consumer Electronics Show in January, manufacturers unveiled the first digital high definition sets, sets that will be on retail shelves this Fall. Broadcasters are preparing to go on the air with high definition broadcasts as early as this Spring - and digital broadcasts are slated to reach the top ten markets by November. As we begin the transition to digital, it is critical to keep consumers informed - about the programming and products available to them and the impact this change will have on their daily lives.
