Astute comments, bulls and bears alike. If only I had such strength of conviction. Since I do not, I wonder if any of you can recommend a mutual fund focused on this nascent sector of the telecomm industry in the event I want to hedge? I am long on LVLT and QWST. Thanks in advance

Anyone know of a mutual fund that focuses on fiber optic systems?

Just Me: A HEARTY WELCOME TO THIS THREAD............
Your info is indeed welcome. The point you make about going
from telegraph to telephone is very cogent and akin to what
George Gilder has been "preaching" about the new Paradigm -
The Telecosm...suppose "we" had all tried to analyze Thomas
Edison' s "company" at the time of, "Watson come here!"......
What was his p/e ratio (how did it compare to Western Union -
the giant in comm. at the time - oh! no! you're still not in WU?
How was Edison's book value compared with WU? The point
is self evident: LVLT may (stress may - this ain't - at least yet -
for "widows and orphans") be a budding PRD (EK didn't want
the technology); SYN ( a birth control pill - guffaw); XRX -
Kodak didn''t want that one either; Chrysler, F, and GM all turned
down a chance to buy into after WW2...(funny looking cars)....
Enough,
Glad to have you aboard,
Don

I sure hope L3 is going to eventually go all optical. All long haul will be done to that spec. All optical is mighty expensive right now and there is no infrastructure for it. Also, the technology is still in a crude phase of development. LVLT has to get the show on the road and that initially will be done with SONET.

Cambrian has probably the best business strategy on all optical. They don't want to throw the electron baby out with the optical bath. Rather, approach optical as the practical demand for it grows and concurrently develop the interface to support existing technologies. If it was your billion+ to spend, you'd suddenly become a money person and take the more conservative route. You can't force a good idea until its time has come.

Your attitude is good, but you're going to have to be very patient for it to pay off.
