As a (gasp!) attorney that does civil litigation I can tell you that even the most frivolous suit has to grind its way through the court system until a summary judgment motion can be filed, briefed, responded to (several times...) and finally argued. This can take months, maybe years. Disgusting, in my view, and bewildering, to the unfortunate souls caught up in it.
