jeez Maurice, you promised a full rant which we haven't had for just an age and then you pull back and proceed in a calm and orderly fashion, ending with total civility. This has shattered my expectations, and just before the weekend. My theory is that now with your handsome mug plastered all over the Q thread, you have entered another life stage. Fess up--are we going genteel with the coming of celebrity? (Great picture with you chatting away on your Q phone, Ramsey grinning from ear to ear--which I had not thought possible--and was that Caxton or Harvey on the end? Next year Surfer Mike's heading for Q town even at the risk of degrading the photogenic level!)
Phil, Leslie--don't cede the military market to I* just yet. When MOT announced their deal with the DoD, I went moping on over to the Motley Q thread and posted the sad tidings. readware came back with one of his gustier salvos in about 3 nanoseconds, to wit: CDMA is not exactly an unknown quality to the military boys either historically or currently. Lots of that stuff flying in the Gulf War cuz the transmission is damn tough to crack. (evidently one of the prime reasons for early DARPA funding). The kicker is Bernard Schwartz with a couple of decades at old Loral under his belt--readware made it quite clear that Bernie will get his share of military business, that he knows his way around the Pentagon, and that Surfer Mike should stick with Hobie boards. Humbly submitted, SM

Maurice, I'm curious. What does Net access cost down under in NZ land?

As I'm sure you know, in the USofA it is generally $20 / month for unlimited access, plus your local phone connection. That's assuming there is a net node within your local calling area, but for a large majority of Americans, there is.

Local phone costs everywhere are free after the first minute. In NYC, unlike the great majority of the country, there is no way of buying an unlimited number of local calls as well. Most places, one can buy for a pretty cheap rate an unlimited number, as well as time per call, for a flat rate.

A second line tends to cost $60 or so to install. The rate including taxes per line in NYC before additional calls, long distance, is about $16/month. So, net net, dedicated 24/7 net access at 44kbps

Hows it down your area?

(And I know that unlike the US, most internet connections downunder really involve international communications back to the US, although by hyper efficient Internet multiplexing, compared to voice.)

Doug

BTW, just heard over the ITN Brit news (which of course we get in NYC) that you lot have again been inflicted by a power blackout. Hope its clearning up and your electronics are firing up.
