we were about 20 or 30 minutes into the trading day friday and veco had a total volume of 1400 shares......not very much.......

Dave, I guarantee you that regardless of total volume for the day, except for those few periods of time when there is some real trading activity, the market makers always have a 3/4 point spread. The only times during the day when it is slow that there isn't a 3/4 point spread is when there is an ECN (Instinet, TNTO, Island, BTRD, etc.) helping to narrow the spread.
