My reason was to balance out my long positions on tech stocks. So far I am about long: 5 to short: 1. I guess that makes me very optomistic still. I agree, the float is too small in amzn. That is why there has been such a run up. This stock will only die when the shorts stop being so terrified. The shorts have been buying to cover themselves since $60 in big way. The next few weeks will tell the tale. If the bulls can raise enough enthusiasm to buy at these levels, in the face of huge competition then we are off for another run. (how many hundreds of millions will Barnes and other invest to buy back their clients... it won't even show up on their balance sheet... but it will ensure red ink for years for amzn)

I have been investing since 1964. This stock market is the biggest run that I have ever seen, by far, and it fortunately has made retirement a lot easier.
