Xy. re. different people's opinion
Intel's brand equity is sooo strong that I can't resist using it in my sales pitch. I am a white box assembler and therefore do not have a brand name to lean on except to point out to prospective buyers that we build only Intel processors in our systems which every one seems to be able to accept.

Been doing this for 12 years and have used some AMD processors, the 386,486 variety and been overall satisfied with performance but at the Pentium level we've sold exclusively Intel's processors and I'm thus not a good judge of how the current competition is stacking up.

My business model is to go after the higher quality buyer and let these lower end Compaq , Packard Bell guys fight it out in the sub $1000 AMD arena.

IMO that these sub $1000 boxes will only wet the whistles of new purchasers and they will be back looking for bigger, better, faster.

I overall agree with Intel's marketing to the low end and high end as long as they don't hurt their brand equity to most Intel means better than not equal to.
