I know what you mean about motorcycles!! My husband wanted one, and I discouraged him. My philosophy of safety while moving from place to place falls closer to being totally encased in a very strong and square Volvo. On the other hand, men need to feel free, and make their own decisions. But when children come, women really need to count on the continued existence of their husbands whenever that is possible.

I was a little afraid of dykes on bikes until I briefly took care of the tiny newborn of a young doctor who was definitely one. I think it is just a pose, really, perhaps a way of feeling less vulnerable. She was gentle, tender and very sweet and loving with her little baby. I do think it would be fascinating to study the two groups, and see what the developmental similarities and differences are. Maybe the dykes on bikes have adapted a tougher persona because they have had negative experiences with men in childhood, and have erected a shell that says STAY AWAY! to them. Perhaps lipstick lesbians as a group are more secure, and perhaps more masculine women have a more serious female hormonal detriment. It will certainly be interesting, as more knowledge is gained, to understand some of the causative factors of homosexuality better.

My daughter has very pale blonde hair almost to her waist, and I really just like looking at it, so of course I, too, would prefer a feminine look to something butch with a buzz cut. But of course we are being silly, and it is not really possible to direct children in these ways.
