Diana,

The old line carriers like MCI will tend to go as long as possible pretending they're doing a great job against QWST. WCOM mgmt is much better at understanding the new competitive environment, particularly the need to do partnerships and mergers to create a lot of added value in the CLEC and internet business quickly. MCI would rather fight the BOCs. I've heard from people who deal with it directly that there's a great deal of tension between the WCOM and MCI execs and it will probably require a few months to do the necessary housecleaning. But WCOM will do what's needed. They bought MCI for their cash flow, network assets, cash flow, sales force, and cash flow. Did I mention cash flow?

All in all I think WCOM IS one of the upstarts as long as they integrate MCI quickly into their style. Interestingly, although Ebbers gets all the credit, it's John Sidgmore, formerly CEO of UUNET, that is driving and signing off on much of their overall business strategy. He's extremely talented and they're lucky to have him. I think your stock will be fine.
