MCI Backs Bill To Protect Consumers From Slamming

PR Newswire - March 27, 1998 17:57
MCIC %TLS %UTI %LEG V%PRN P%PRN

DENVER, March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- This statement should be attributed to
Bill Levis, regional director for MCI Public Policy:

"MCI supports the kind of anti-slamming legislation introduced today in
the Colorado House of Representatives, and its endorsement of Third Party
Verification as an important consumer protection tool.
"Slamming -- the unauthorized transfer of a customer's account -- is
damaging for consumers and our industry. MCI has suffered millions of dollars
in lost revenue by having large numbers of our customers converted away
without their authorization.
"MCI is a leader on this issue, employing quality control measures that
set the gold standard in the industry -- Third Party Verification, or TPV.
MCI advocates adoption of TPV as a nationwide requirement, and we are pleased
that it is a part of House Bill 1405.
"Third Party Verification involves telephone confirmation of carrier
switches by an independent third party verification company. TPV is quick,
consumer friendly, and effective. It confirms essential information about the
customer's decision to switch in a one to two minute call. Importantly, the
TPV company receives no commission or other financial incentives to confirm
sales orders. It simply verifies customer choice. MCI's own experience with
TPV convinces us that it is the single most consumer-friendly and effective
approach to curbing slamming."

The one month free trial has subjected us to slower turnaround time and a lower class of
posters. But what can you expect for people who riding for free.

Dennis,

Are you finding SI's response to be slow? I assume that is what you meant. If that is correct, might it possible be the new interface or just that added traffic?

Personally, I paid to get on SI to avoid the Yahoo type attackers, and get to informative
posts. Now the free thing has them here, too.

The free "thing" ends March 31st. Then it will be time to pay up or leave within 30 days. Oh well:-)

Glenn

OT. Dennis, I completely agree. The Yahoo ASND threat is worthless. To get to one nugget (maybe the stray ASND engineer posting meaningful info), you have to wade through inananity, pure hypesters, shorts without facts, and people with just too much time on their hands who enjoy a forum. Maybe there is something to an elitism threadism online. If I were running SI, I would keep increasing the annual/lifetime fee to keep it special. Maybe even a thread master to boot off people with obvious, superficial agendas who don't post anything worthwhile. Just a thought. djane

What class are you in? Please explain, your statement seems very vague or without much thought.
