I have heard everything from 5000 to 20000. I have no doubt that there will be some layoffs but certainly nothing before the FTC announcement which according to the CPQ and DEC releases last week will not be for at least another month. I doubt if anyone has a real idea at this point what the numbers will be. I have talked to several middle managers at CPQ and they have absolutely no clue, there has been no reliable information about this inside the company. I have heard that the DEC service organization will not be cut at all, and that is 33000 people, so that leaves only 21000 - of course they may also cut some existing Tandem or CPQ people. Still, 20000 seems pretty unlikely, and CPQ has not had a layoff since 1991.

Jeff; I'm guessing you talking about DEC layoffs, but even for
them that sounds to high, and it's like don't borrow trouble
from tomorrow..the whole nation is short tech people..and begging
for them and I don't think CPQ is going to be stupid enough
after the merger to eliminate any personal they don't have to.
It's to much like shooting yourself in the foot. The help goes
to work for the compitition..and in this sector people hop jobs
fast enough without having to resort to such drastic steps.
I doubt it would even be the lower numbers..after all that cost
money. I suppose there will be some suffleling..and a good number
may be up rooted.. ( offered a hopson's )..as to the job and
location, maybe a few get early retirement offers..but you don't
make drastic cuts in manpower if you intend to expand..any way
it's to hard to get trained workers right now.
My guess is there will be more that drag up because they don't
want to take a new assignment or move..than will actually be laid
off. This sector is growing to fast at this time for the number
of the cut backs being tossed around. I think fear, and
such has caused a lot of conjecture with little substance.
A few layoffs I can see, and may be called for..as many people
get into rut after they stay on a job so long they think they own
the company, and a new broom may just sweep those kind out the
door, but even that will likely be selective.
