Volvo does not have the scale or resources to compete globally. Their products are dated and very overpriced for their economy car origins. The US is Volvo's largest market, the Europeans choose better alternatives.

If Volvo survives at all it will be as a brand through merger or acquisition, like Jaguar (Ford). They failed doing so with Renault. Mitsubishi was a likely buyer before the Asian meltdown.

The truck business is far more viable than their passenger line, though.
