That is so interesting that you feel spiritually empty when you leave it. I have the exact opposite reaction. I feel like some gutsy pioneer woman (now please, don't choke on anything and die laughing when you read this) stocking up on necessities for her family. All that food makes me feel safe- as if I can somehow protect my family from harm by storing up enough food and dry goods. Now I could actually save them from starvation for many months- as I think my supply of canned goods is ENORMOUS. But without power the stuff in the freezer would rot. I really think I need to get it its own generator- then nothing will ever hurt us.

Is it still true that most Europeans shop daily, and carry their soon-to-be dinner home in reusable bags and baskets?

Now that most women work, no. Like us, they tend to go to the supermarket at the weekend and buy enough to get on with for most of the week. They generally do buy bread daily (if they have a large enough family to warrant the purchase of a loaf a day) and prefer to get fruit and veggies at the greengrocer's, rather than the supermarket.

Very few people use the traditional string bag anymore. We use plastic ones, just like everybody else.

Costco is great for extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, 3 lb bags of imported Italian Parmesan cheese (that I freeze) and dried imported Italian tortellini. Great buys on spices and dried mushrooms.

Their $20 Kirkland leather sneakers and 8 paks of Kirkland 35mm film for $8 can't be beat. Great prices on video tapes and CD's too. I use Costco as my pharmacy - really big savings there on nutritional supplements also.

Have you noticed that their prices have been going up with their stock though? I like going there, it's an adventure. I have a "Wholesale" membership, so I can get in and out before the "family" members.

Oh yes, their canned ham is a definite "buy". How are they on the Velveeta front?
