In my experience, you can reduce the spread, at least on a smaller order. Say it is 34 bid, 34 3/4 ask. Put in a limit order to buy 300 at 34 1/2, it will be executed within a minute. Put in a limit order to sell 300 at 34 1/4, it will be executed within a minute. True, this does not always work, but it can be worth a try. A clue to this is when the spread is 30-30 3/4, often the last transaction is somewhere between the spread.
