Gene,>>>I believe Intel's last reported ASP on CPU's was about $250)<<<.

I was trying to distinguish between the high end - the CPU's that Dell sells, the ones that goes into small servers, and portable (notebook) units - and those that go into the sub $1k units.

I would appreciated it if you could cite the source for the $250 ASP.

The $250 ASP sounds somewhat plausible if you assumed Intel sold 100M units at $250 ASP - that would come out to about $25B equaling Intel sales for entire 1997. But that would have to include not only highend and lowend cpus but also other much lower cost units of whatever else they manufacture - because I don't think they sold 100M CPUs 1997.

In any case, as you say, it was only a WAG. If you know anything for certain, please share it with us.
