Mohan,
<<what about Malaysian art>>

To be sure. Some of the most intersting music and dance you have ever seen. Also a growing school of literature and poetry. Film making is also growing here and quite a few film starts hail from here. Many make there way to the Hong Kong film industry. However, inevitably, the films are "action" movies with a lot of Kung "Foolery" as that is what is commercially succesful. Not unlike Holly"rude" huh?

One of my favorite local art forms is batik (hand painted cloth in colorful designs or scenes). While Batik is not uniquely Malaysian it can be found here in a high form. There is a colony of Batik artists in Kota Kinabalu that are world renowned. I have 2 pieces from there and hope to get more.

There are a number of local Chinese artist that paint in all forms and we have been to a couple of interesting galleries that feature local artists. I have purchased a "Kempong" (village) scene in acrylics by an artist named Sziew Wen that is a favorite. I believe there is an opportunity for investment if one knew what they were doing but I do not.

Jewelry and craft art abounds here. Potters, textiles, painting, figurines, etc etc. There is a central market in K.L.where tourist can find examples of this. One of the most unusual forms I have found is lacquered egg shell mosaic art. It can be done on all kinds of things, but the most interesting to me is the boxes that are made from local woods then lacquered and layerd with colored egg shell pieces in all kinds of designs. Really nice stuff.

Best,
Stitch
