To be accepted for auto use is very demanding next to aerospace its the most difficult to get accepted.Cree has done this Nichia has not.The competition will come in Nichia market not Cree's.it looks like they they hit a home run with their cbl chip.I think you will see orders coming from Japan for cellar and laptops and signs soon.3"has been done and shown to trade probale its a year away to be comm.cbl means a great reduction in cost well over 50% and makes for a brighter chip by 50% I believe they are working with other additives like Indium which will give them the brightest chip of over 6cd.nichia is working on sapphire as well as HP and its has big drawbacks. It can't be vertical which means tat the end user who has spent millions on packaging equipment cant use them ,the billions of red leds are all vertical!Nichia are bright but can't be used for demanding application because of esd.and they are not a vertical device.Cree has the lead in price .20 vs .90 for Nichia and soon they will have brightness for most applications. The future look great not only for LED'S in blue and green but for microwave and power supplies and lasiers Nichia lasier is only a lab curiosity because it is to pricey like $10,000 Cree is working on a $10 laser, that their goal.nichia has done great thing but CREE has lined up the likes of siemens VW , RTN ABB MOT ETC.I have never seen nichia with any other co.
