"Hey Drake, Give me a Break!"

This slogan is the main theme contained in all Drake Business Schools advertisement media. The school has been in business for 125 years as it was established in 1873.

History

Drake Business School was founded by Dr. William E. Drake in 1873. He was one of the first educators to recognize that the invention of the typewriter would revolutionize office work. The basic philosophy has been to prepare students for the best possible job in the shortest possible time.

General Information

A sampling of programs offered by DBS include Executive Office Specialist, Computerized Office Specialist, Medical Office Assistant, Medical Assistant, Microcomputer Applications, and Medical Billing. There are numerous individual courses offered under these disciplines; Accounting, Business Administration, General Education, Keyboarding, Medical, Office Procedures and Word Processing.

School Locations

The school network appears to consist of six (6) locations:

Drake School of Manhattan
225 Broadway (212) 349-7900
156 William St. (212) 577-7900

Drake School of the Bronx

Drake School Visit

My do-diligence trip to TASA included a quick visit to Drake School of Westchester, 4 Lyon Place located in White Plains. This is a very wealthy and influential suburb of New York City. My arrival time was approximately 2:30 in the afternoon. The Director of Admissions still had not heard the news regarding the acquisition by Touchstone Applied Science Associates. He was extremely interested and asked for a copy of the press release. Not having a copy available I promised to fax the announcement to his attention on Monday.

Organizational Structure

I do not completely understand the affiliation that Drake Business Schools (DBS) has with the individual educational entities previously named. Apparently DBS manages, administrates or supports these locations as noted in the School of Westchester 1997-1998 Catalog that I picked up on my visit.

The institution utilizes the services of Drake Business School for the management of the institution as a whole. Drake Business School staff specialists provide central management services such as planning and new program design, development of institutional policy, quality assurance, formal staff training and faculty development, monitoring of legal and regulatory requirements, and financial and audit services.

Legal Control

The Catalog also states:

Drake School of Westchester is owned and operated by the Bronx School for Quality Education, a New York State not-for-profit organization, whose office is located at 2122 White Plains Road, Bronx, New York 10462

DBS Organizational Staff

Basil Katsamakis, President
Bonnie Scott, VP for Academic Affairs
Steven L. Tesser, VP & Chief Financial Officer
Paula Caldwell, Corporate Director of Financial Aid
Mary Del Vecchio, Dir. of Personnel Benefits and Central Admin.

Note: The press release indicates that the President of DBS will remain. The other executives could compliment and/or add depth to TASA's current management team. My notes are a bit sketchy but I believe that DBS employs approximately 150 or 250 individuals.

Regrettably, I did not arrive at TASA in time for the shareholders meeting as Murphy's Law thwarted my well laid plans in the morning of March 27th. Notes regarding my brief visit will follow shortly.

Regards,

Tom

Second Quarter Ends!

April 30, 1998 marks the end of Touchstone Applied Science Associates second quarter. Earnings announcement is not far off. I suspect that we will be entertained until earnings are released by another series of positive press announcements. Merger news? BETA contracts? MLP developments?

Stay tuned!

Regards,

Tom
