Craig:
Scanning the local paper for Computer ads in last two days
produces following :
Dillards 1/2 page CPQ $1649 +$300 extra for 14" monitor =$2169 w/t
Office Depot: HP $2499 (after $125 mail-in rebate) with 15" monitor and color printer =$2706 up-front w/t
HP $1574 (after 125 rebate) with 15 monitor and printer=$1899 up front w/t
CPQ $1299 (after $50 rebate) with 14" monitor= $1443 up-front w/t.
With the stores pushing these prices( all of which cost more than my Dell in 1993( @$1176 with monitor w/t) I think the threat of the $1000 computer may be overated, and that CPQ and HP can make a profit. Not everybody reads the computer magazines where many of the cheapies are advertised.
The prices of CPQ's at Radio Shack will give a better picture
in a few weeks, and I find it hard to believe that CPQ will
settle for a break-even price in a consumer market that large.
