Personal trading statistics.

I get asked from time to time how my personal trading account is doing so I thought I would share some statistics with everybody. These results are net of commissions, margin interest, and dividends. In other words, I subtracted commissions and margin interest and added dividends and capital gains.

I have only been keeping detailed data in a spreadsheet since 1993 so that's as far back as I could go. I began entering dates for my trades in 1996 so I couldn't go back further than that for average holding period.

1993 to 1997
Dan: +423%
S&P 500: +123%
Difference: +300%

Compounded annual rate of return 1993 to 1997
(I'm fairly certain that this is calculated correctly)
Dan: 39.2%
S&P 500: 17.4%
Difference: +21.8%

1997
Dan: +19.7%
S&P 500: +31.1%
Difference: -11.4%

1998 YTD
Dan: +130.2%
S&P: +12.9%
Difference: +117.3

Number of positions closed:
1996: 39
1997: 136
1998 YTD: 31

Best year excluding 1998 (YTD) was 1994:
Dan: +49.8%
S&P 500: +1.3%
Difference: +48.5%

Worst year was 1995:
Dan: +8.7%
S&P 500: + 37.6%
Difference: -28.9%

Average holding period:
1996: 46.8 days
1997: 33.1 days
1998 (YTD): 27.3 days

Percentage of trades that are profitable:
1996: 82.1%
1997: 64.7%
1998 YTD: 80.6%

A few comments...while I am disappointed with my return in 1997, I am very pleased with my results since 1993. The fourth quarter of 1997 was a tough one for me. I had been up 85% until September 1997 but got waxed in the big correction and only finished the year up 19.7% But with a gain of 130% so far this year, it has obviously been an exceptional year.

Best of luck to everybody and happy trading. May our success continue!

Dan
