Hadco Says Its Toxic By-Products Don't End Up In Fertilizer

Dow Jones Newswires -- March 27, 1998

SALEM, N.H. (Dow Jones)--Hadco Corp. (HDCO) denied an
environmentalist group's claim that its toxic by-products of its
manufacturing process end up in fertilizer used in farms
nationwide.

The maker of printed circuits and other electronics gear returns
used etchant, which contains dissolved copper, to the supplier. The
supplier in turn converts the etchant to copper compounds for use
in the wood preservative and additive industries - not for fertilizer.

The spokesman said a small amount of ammonia used by Hadco
ends up in fertilizer, but the ammonia doesn't contain copper.

The Environmental Working Group, a Washington-based
non-profit watchdog organization, made the claims in a broad
report about the use of toxic waste in fertilizer.
